Motivation Monday

Motivation Monday – 19/12/2016

Today I want to talk about not letting people’s opinions affect you.
Yes I know. Sounds easier to say than actually do, but then again what isn’t? Everything we do in life sounds easier said than done. The way I see it, at the end of the day it’s about what you decide to put effort in, and learning to not let people’s opinions affect you takes a LOT of effort.

It takes confidence, it takes strength. Some people may say it takes thick skin but to be honest I don’t like that term. It sounds like saying you need a shield from life and to me that would mean not only protecting yourself from being hurt but also preventing the beauty of life from getting to you.

I believe there is two steps to learning to not let opinions affect you.

Step one is loving yourself, which I have talked about at the beginning of this month (here).

Step two is knowing and accepting that people’s opinions cannot change who you truly are. They can shape the way you see yourself, they can mask the true you and and show the world a version of yourself that you think will please them. As human beings we are always trying to fit in, its natural but how far will we go to fit in? How much of ourself are we willing to deny? Because that is exactly what we do when we let outside opinions affect us. We hide who we truly are and want to become in order to fit into the world. We hide our potential to be the beautiful people we can be, and that’s a potential that lives in all of us.

You don’t need to fit in. Fake it until you make it does not apply in this instance, pretending to be someone you are not will only hurt you in the long run. You need to have the courage and the faith to be yourself, remember at the end of the day there’s are only 2 opinions that matter. Your Lord’s and yours. Nobody else’s view of you means anything, and as long as you remember to love yourself and that their opinions cannot change who you are you can achieve anything you set your mind to.
If you live by people’s opinions you will also die by them. I know it’s hard, I have learnt how hard it is because I have been through it and somedays I still struggle, but if you start everyday reminding yourself at least 1 good thing you love about you, before you know it you will have a book of good qualities, your confidence will be through the roof and the world will see and accept the beautiful person you truly are.
